The Best Ohio State Games of my Life
After Ohio State's near walk-off win against Notre Dame this past Saturday, I couldn't help but think of how lucky I am to have grown up in Ohio and be a buckeye fan. Unlike most places, they have always had success in my life (minus 2011) and have won two national championships, while competing in three other championship games. While there has been major success, Ryan Day said this game will go down as "one of the big wins in Ohio State history". That statement has had been going through my mind all week and wondered if that was true. So, I decided to think about some of the great Ohio State wins in my lifetime.
Honorable Mention:
8. Ohio State vs. Michigan 42-39 (11-18-06)
A win and in game featuring #1 and #2 ended with the Buckeyes reaching the National Championship.
7. Ohio State - Michigan 56-27 (11-24-18)
While the Buckeyes had no shot going to the Playoffs, they steamrolled the Wolverines to keep them out of the playoff and the Buckeyes won the Big Ten.
6. Ohio State - Miami (FL) 31-24 2OT BCS National Championship (1-3-03)
The year the Buckeyes broke the U. Ohio State pulls off the major updet and wins their first National Championship since Woody Hayes was on the sidelines in 1970.
Top 5 list:
5. Ohio State - Notre Dame 17-14 (9-23-23)
An epic defensive battle that saw two powerhouses go back and forth in the second half and hopefully the confidence that this offense and Kyle McCord can bring the rest of the season.
4. Ohio State - Michigan 30-27 2OT (11-26-16)
I'm not going to sugarcoat it. Ohio State's offense was absolutely terrible in this game. JT Barrett went 15-32 for 124 yards and an INT. Tyler Durbin went 1/3 on field goal attempts. The only reason we won was because Wilton Speight threw 2 INTs and lost a fumble. By the way, JT was not short.
3. Ohio State - Clemson 49-28 CFP Semifinals (1-1-21)
The Buckeyes finally broke through against the Tigers in a game that was even uglier than the final score. Justin Fields threw for 6 touchdowns and Clemson has been shaky ever since. Not bad for the 11th best team in the country that year.
2. Ohio State - Alabama 42-35 CFP Semifinals (1-1-15)
Cardale Jones and company defeated a SEC powerhouse on their way to the National Championship game. The 2014 season is most memorable for having Braxton Miller out for the entire season, while JT Barrett had a season-ending injury against Michigan. Jones came in against Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game and the rest is history. Mark May and everyone else doubted the Buckeyes, the start of "Ohio Against The World".
1. Ohio State - Oregon 42-20 CFP National Championship (1-12-15)
How do you top defeating Alabama? By winning the whole thing about 2 weeks later, as the Ezekiel Elliott ran for 4 touchdowns and defeated Hiesman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Ducks for the first College Football Playoff National Championship game.
