Golf

Golf is a sport that is probably one of the most difficult to master. As someone who is on the golf team here at ONU, it has been something that I have struggled with. I progressed every season in high school, starting at a 100 average my freshman year to having an average of 84 my senior year. I have had averages of 97, 92, and 92 in three seasons in college.

This past spring season was the hardest season I have ever had in golf. Most of the tournaments I played in were cold, raining, and really windy. If you didn't know, these are the last things you want for a round of golf.

This summer, I have been working on a new swing. My old swing was over the top and steep. This causes big chunks in the ground (divots) and can cause slices and hooks (ball goes way left/right). With my new swing, I am going through the ball and turning my hips more. When doing this, the ball goes straighter, as well as controlling the ball to fade or draw (controlled left/right). When the swing is fixed, I know that I will be able to score better and rise up the rankings on the team.

The ONU golf team is going to be really good next year. The men's golf team has never won an OAC title, and this year is going to be a great opportunity to win it. We are going to be a very deep roster with many great golfers. We just finished 3rd last season, which is the best finish in 7 years. This upcoming season, I need to average around a 78 to be in the top 5, or the "A" team. This is my last season to prove that I can compete with the best golfers in Division III, and this summer is about getting to that point. Swing changes usually take at least 1-2 years to complete, and I have until August, so it is going to be a lot of work. However, I have already made progress and I will be ready for the fall.

  1. That is so cool! I am personally not good at golf and have never been much into it, but it's so amazing to hear your love for it and for the ONU team as well. I hope y'all finally get that OAC championship!!

  2. This is awesome! I picked up a golf club for the first time in my life this past semester and shot what you average on 18 holes on 9... if that shows show "good" I was! Good luck this fall!

  3. Garrett, I am also a golfer so I can definitely relate to this! My swing is good, but it is not great. It's so difficult to completely relearn how to do something that you have done for so long, and it can be so frustrating too! Good luck!!
