Coaching
Throughout my life, I have always been involved with sports. I played baseball, peewee football, golf, and basketball. Although I golf here at ONU, golf is not my favorite sport. Basketball has always been my passion.
If I am being fully transparent, I was never a great basketball player. I was a decent guard who could shoot and pass well, but I could not guard anybody. However, I feel as if I have a strong basketball IQ. I see the plays unfold, see mismatches, and can help my teammates do better.
Since high school ended, I was away from basketball for a year. Then, I realized I wanted to coach. I always thought about coaching, but I never really thought I would be able to do it at a young age. So, I looked up schools near ONU and found Cory-Rawson (20 minutes) and contacted their coach about helping out. Their coach emailed me back and he was able to help me coach. I was able to help with the middle school, as well as do the stats and help with some practices with the high school teams as well. I really enjoyed helping and getting to know the kids and the community. Our middle school teams were't good, but the varsity team had a winning record and won a tournament game!
After the year, Ben Logan (where I went to school) had an opening for a middle school coach. My dad was the JV coach and I knew our coaches at the high school well so they offered me the job. I was really excited to go back and help grow a program that I grew up in and was able to do great things for our communities. I was also able to coach my youngest brother, Xavier.
During the season, we finished 3-14. We were not great, but we did get better. During 5th and 6th grade, their team won 3 games in 2 years, so I was happy with the progress we made. This season, I am coaching their 8th grade team and I am excited to see how much we have improved from last year.
Do you want to coach anything?
To answer your question, I have frequently thought that in the future I would coach soccer, however I don't know if I would do it at a competitive level or just a little league level.
